Defensive Driving Course FAQ

General questions

Do I qualify for point reduction?

According to the driver violation point system, as long as you have not taken a defensive driving course within the last 18 months, up to 4 points can be reduced from your driving record. However, you can’t use the course towards future New York traffic tickets.

How do I know that course has been recorded on my driving record?

We record all course completions within days of finishing. If you’re still wondering about your New York traffic ticket, you can check with the New York DMV by ordering a driving record. Click Here to order a driving record.

How do I qualify for an insurance discount?

If you have auto insurance and are 18 years or older, you qualify. There is no specific plan or insurance provider you need to have to receive the discount. It’s a statewide requirement for all New York insurance companies to honor any certificate of completion from approved defensive driving providers.

When do I get my certificate showing I completed the course?

You’ll receive your certificate within 7-10 business days at no extra cost to you. If you would like to receive the certificate sooner, you may select a speedier shipping option at an additional cost. Select from overnight, 2 day, or 5 day shipping.

How often do I need to take this New York defensive driving course to keep my insurance discount?

Your insurance company is required to honor the discount for 36 months, but you can retake the course to continue receiving the discount. We’ll send you an email when your 36 month mark comes up so you can retake defensive driving.

Can more than one person on the same insurance policy receive a discount for taking the course?

Every person on the insurance policy must take their own defensive driving course to each receive a discount.
